Upgradation of Primary Schools
The Sindh Secondary Education Improvement Project (SSEIP) has begun and is being rolled out across the province, with a focus on the construction of secondary school blocks in ten districts in southern Sindh. The project aims to improve access to secondary education, particularly for girls, by upgrading primary schools into secondary schools. The initiative also includes efforts to improve teaching and learning, as well as reforms to the examination system, which will cover all districts in Sindh. The selection of schools for upgradation was based on criteria such as education ranking of the districts, low female literacy rates, high poverty levels, and a shortage of major secondary schools. The ten districts selected for the initial implementation of the construction component are:
- Sujawal
- Tharparkar
- Umerkot
- Thatta
- Badin
- Sanghar
- Tando Muhammad Khan,
- Matiari
- Mirpurkhas
- Tando Allahyar
The new secondary school blocks will feature classrooms, science labs, a library/digital classroom, staff rooms, a principal's office, separate toilets for girls and boys, water supply, and a septic tank. The school design is gender-responsive and will be equipped with solar power for continuous energy supply. A construction supervision firm will monitor the civil works.
The SSEIP is funded by the Asian Development Bank and is being implemented by the School Education and Literacy Department of the Government of Sindh. Upon the successful completion of the project in these ten districts, it will be expanded to cover the rest of the province. The goal of the project is to improve the quality of education and increase access to secondary education for all.
