Teachers Trained on Newly Developed SLO-Based Manual Under SSEIP
Karachi, 24 February: The Secretary, School Education and Literacy Department, Sindh, Zahid Ali Abassi, has termed the development of the Teachers’ Training Manual a significant achievement under the ongoing Sindh Secondary Education Improvement Project (SSEIP). He noted that this is the first-ever training initiative for secondary school teachers in Sindh, based on Student Learning Objectives (SLOs).
Speaking at the concluding ceremony of a 12-day capacity-building training for 96 master trainers, Mr. Abassi recalled that the revision of textbooks based on SLOs began in 2019 and remains an ongoing effort. He expressed confidence that the newly developed Teachers’ Training Manual would enable teachers to enhance classroom learning and improve students' educational outcomes.
The training, held from Feb 10 to Feb 21, brought together master trainers from 20 Teacher Training Institutes (TTIs) and the Provincial Institute for Teachers Education (PITE). Participants were trained in five core subjects: English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. The training emphasized structured pedagogic strategies, content knowledge, and SLO-based methodologies, which are expected to create a multiplier effect in teaching across Sindh.
Key features of the training materials:
- The newly developed Teacher Training Manuals (TTMs) and accompanying handouts focus on:
- Shifting from teacher-centered to learner-centered pedagogy
- Constructivist teaching and learning approaches
- Gender-sensitive teaching strategies
- Integration of ICT for effective teaching
- Promotion of Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS)
The TTMs have been approved and accredited by the Sindh Teacher Education Development Authority (STEDA) and formally notified by the School Education & Literacy Department (SE&LD).
Highlighting the broader impact, SSEIP Project Director Rizwan Soomro stated that preparations are complete for a cascade training program for 2,630 secondary school teachers across Sindh’s six divisions. These trainers of trainers (ToTs) and master trainers (MTs) will further disseminate the knowledge, ensuring a balanced representation of urban-rural and male-female teachers.
“With the successful completion of this initiative, we expect significant improvements in teaching and learning in secondary schools across Sindh,” Mr. Soomro added.
Also present at the ceremony were Deputy Project Director, Muhammad Luqman, Professor Atta Hussain Lakho, TTI Firm representative Nasir Jalil, and other officials
